Tool Maker (Senior)

Job Description

Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, machinists, and hand tools.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Study specification such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions and visualize product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts
  • Compute dimensions, plan layout and determine assembly method and sequence of operations
  • Measure, mark and scribe metal stock for machining
  • Lift machined parts and position and secure parts on surface plate or worktable
  • Smooth flat and contoured surfaces and power grinders, and fit and assemble parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms
  • Verify dimensions, alignments and clearances
  • Examine standard or previously used tools, jigs and fixtures, and recommend design modifications regarding construction and function of parts
  • Develop specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draw or sketch design of product as appropriate

Requirements

  • Formal education and/or equivalent experience in the Tooling Industry
  • Ability to set up and operate metal cutting and/or removal machines
  • Ability to read mechanical blue prints
  • Experience working with metal, tools and machinery for metal fabrication
  • Ability to perform basic shop math
